The Role & Team

To support our continued business growth our Technology department is rapidly growing, and we have newly created opportunities for driven and passionate Data Engineers to join our Technical Services team, who pride themselves on cultivating a culture of growth and opportunity with a focus on career development and progression. Reporting into our Lead Data Engineer, you will work with the broader local data team who work collaboratively with our business teams to identify and understand challenges and opportunities and deliver organisation wide insights to help accelerate robust decision making, drive consistency and enable self-service for the business. 

In your role, you will migrate & transform data, creating views that can be utilised across our business. You will facilitate the use of data within the data team as well as allowing the benefits of data to be liberated across the organisation and within our digital transformation. 

At Specsavers, we believe in adopting a hybrid approach to support our people and the future of work. When not working from an alternative location, you will be based at our support office in Port Melbourne. 


What we are looking for

  • An inquisitive nature with a passion for learning and growth 
  • Tertiary qualifications in Computing, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or a relevant area of study related to computer/data sciences
  • Expertise in scripting with SQL, Python or Pyspark and sound knowledge of CI/CD
  • Good technical ability and understanding of how big data platforms work, as well as the use of data development software (ETL packages) and programming languages (usually SQL and Python) to develop tools to extract, transform and load data, as well as to document the creation of these tools. 
  • Excellent communication skills as you will need to discuss technical principles and business processes in simple language to people at all levels. 
  • Good understanding of spark processing clusters and use of ganglia to monitor performance and troubleshoot issues. 
  • Experience in some or all of the following tools & programming languages: 
    • Azure Data Lake 
    • Azure Data Factory 
    • Azure Databricks (inc. SQL and Python) 
    • Azure SQL Server  
    • Power BI Premium
    • Azure DevOps/Git
