Routine hearing check reveals tumour for Rushcliffe resident

A routine hearing check at Specsavers has helped to diagnose a tumour in Widmerpool resident, Jewel Plackett.

The 80-year-old great grandmother visited the Specsavers hearing centre in West Bridgford for her annual hearing check to see Audiologist, Bethany Andrews. Mrs Plackett said she was suffering from Tinnitus as well as some pain on the left side of her face so, after carrying out the hearing test, Bethany decided to refer her to her GP for further investigation.

‘We refer all customers who experience constant, one-sided tinnitus. Coupled with the pain that Mrs Plackett was experiencing, I thought it warranted further investigation,’ says Bethany.

Bethany’s instincts were correct. Mrs Plackett’s doctor immediately referred her to the Queen’s Medical Centre. Here she saw an ear, nose and throat (ENT) consultant and had two MRI scans which confirmed a Meningioma; a slow growing tumour which forms in the membranous layers of the brain.

‘I was pretty shocked when I was told I had a tumour,’ says Mrs Plackett. ‘I’d had the tinnitus for quite a few months and while it was annoying, I didn’t really think anything of it. I’m very grateful for the treatment I received from Specsavers. Bethany was very thorough and helpful, making sure I knew what was going on. Without my hearing check, I would have been none the wiser.

‘The consultant gave me the option to have the tumour removed but I’ve chosen to monitor its growth instead. I’ve already had one further MRI scan and it was the same size, so I will go back again for another scan towards the end of the year.’

While meningioma’s can cause side effects, so far Mrs Plackett hasn’t experienced any further issues and is able to go about her normal life.

‘This case clearly illustrates the importance of getting your hearing checked,’ says Bethany. ‘While most people are aware they need to have their eyes tested every two years, they should also be having their hearing checked and the audiologist will recommend how often this should be monitored.

‘However, if you notice any changes in your hearing then you should make an appointment or seek professional advice immediately. I’m pleased to hear that Mrs Plackett has been given a diagnosis and the tumour can be monitored.’
