Meet Holly who joined us straight from college on a summer placement. Six years later and she’s an Art Director in our in-house creative agency where she gets to bring to life all her creative ideas across our TV, radio and press campaigns.

Hi, my name is Holly, I’m 24 and I am an Art Director in the Agency.

What was your background before joining Specsavers?
I came to Specsavers straight from the Guernsey College of Further Education where I studied Art and Design.

Tell me a little bit about your journey at Specsavers?
The year I graduated from college, Specsavers introduced the ‘Creative Academy’. They invited further education leavers to attend a workshop in the hopes of being invited back to interview for a 10 month placement working in a creative concept team. I managed to get down to the final round however, I didn’t get the placement. At the time they felt I was more suited to a role in design and offered me a 9 week summer placement in the design team which I was very excited to accept and I have been here ever since. In the 6 years since, I have worked as a Web Designer, Graphic Designer and an Art Director.

How did Specsavers help and support your development?
I have been lucky enough to experience three different roles from which I have gained a wide variety of skills that I am now able to use every day as an Art Director which involves seeing through projects from concept to completion. Getting to experience these different roles has also helped ensure that I am constantly evolving in my career. More recently I have been on a course at the SCA (School of Communication Arts) in London which was a really great experience where I attended lectures and classes and gained new skills that I now use every day. It also helped remind me of the importance of exploring your ideas freely and without limitation when approaching a new brief (even the ridiculous ideas, because you just never know if there’s something in them).

What gives you pride in your role?
Nothing beats that feeling at the end of a job when you see what was once an idea floating around your head, come to life. Whether it’s on a tv screen, in a store window or on the radio.

What have you learnt during your time at Specsavers?
I learn a lot from the people around me every day who have been and still are vital to my growth at Specsavers. Everyone can learn something from each other.

What would you say to encourage someone thinking about applying?
I learnt on the job at Specsavers by coming straight from school and I think it is a great alternative to university. If you are in a similar position or are starting a brand-new career Specsavers are very accommodating to this and will help you become the best you can be in your new role.

Why do you love working at Specsavers?
I have made great friendships with a lot of people and feel lucky that I get to work with them every day. They’re a lovely, talented group of people.

What one word would you use to describe the Specsavers culture?
Warm.

Finally, tell us a little bit about yourself (hobbies and interest)
I enjoy doing anything creative and spending time with my friends and family and my dog, Vinnie. He’s the best.
