The role

Location: This hybrid role requires 3 days on-site at our Burnaby, BC office and 2 days remote per week.

 

Salary: $60,000 - $80,000
Actual compensation within the range will be based on experience. We also offer quarterly variable compensation package (bonus) + benefits.

What You’ll Do

 

Purpose of the role

 

The Intermediate Accountant (internally known as a Store Accountant) is responsible for preparing monthly management accounts and annual statutory accounts for a portfolio of Canadian retail stores. This includes ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all financial data.

 

The Store Accountant will also collaborate with the Store Controller, the Corporate Controller, the Tax Manager, and other key stakeholders to ensure a high standard of financial support and insight is provided to the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the month-end close process for a portfolio of stores, from ledger review through to account preparation.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts and annual financial statements in compliance with internal and external standards.
  • Complete year-end tasks, including responding to audit queries.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Review sales and tender type ingestions.
  • Reconcile third-party insurance, all tender types and GST, and PST accounts.
  • Reconcile other debtors' and creditors' balances.
  • Respond promptly to financial queries from store partners and Support Office teams.
  • Provide relevant financial data and insights to support new store openings.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships across the business.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting accuracy.
  • Participate in ad hoc projects impacting store accounting or financial systems.

 

 

What We’re Looking For

 

Essential

  • 1-2 years of accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting practices.
  • Proven experience with financial close processes, including P&L and balance sheet preparation.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and general ledger systems.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP, basic formulas).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical mindset and attention to detail.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships and communicate financial concepts clearly.
  • A proactive, curious mindset with a commitment to data integrity.

 

Nice to have 

  • Working towards CPA designation.
  • Working knowledge of Open Accounts ERP system.
  • Experience of accounting in a retail environment.
