Why listening is the foundation of great vision care

As a retail partner with Specsavers in Scarborough, Omer Dar sees his role as extending beyond providing eyecare to improving the overall quality of life within the community. Recognizing that vision plays a vital role in how people work, learn, and engage socially, he believes that accessible, high-quality eyecare can have a meaningful impact on wellbeing.
With two locations serving distinct demographics, Omer and his team tailor their approach to meet the unique needs of their customers. By focusing on affordability, education, and preventative care, they help remove barriers that can prevent people from prioritizing their eye health.
Equally important to Omer is building trust. He understands that when customers feel heard and supported, they are more likely to remain engaged in their long-term health. For him, contributing to the community means creating an environment where people feel comfortable, informed, and confident about their care.
Working with customers across Scarborough has reinforced Omer’s understanding of the diversity of healthcare needs within the community. Cultural backgrounds, lifestyles, and varying levels of awareness around eye health all influence how people engage with care and make decisions about their wellbeing.
One of the most valuable lessons he has learned is the importance of listening first. Taking the time to understand each customer’s circumstances—whether related to budget considerations, language barriers, or previous healthcare experiences—enables him and his team to provide care that is both effective and genuinely customer-centred.
These experiences have shaped Omer’s approach, which is grounded in clarity, empathy, and flexibility. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all model, he adapts communication and recommendations to ensure they are practical, relevant, and tailored to each individual. Ultimately, his goal is to meet people where they are, helping them feel confident and empowered in the decisions they make about their eye health.
