Introducing 2024 opticianry scholarship recipient, Ankita Upadhyay
We are excited to introduce you to the recipient of the 2024 Specsavers Student Scholarship, a three-year award presented in collaboration with the Opticians Association of Canada (OAC). This partnership underscores our commitment to advancing the future of eyecare and supporting the next generation of opticians.
We are proud to introduce Ankita Upadhyay as this year’s scholarship recipient. With her exceptional promise and dedication, Ankita is already making a mark in the field. Which Specsavers frame best matches your personality and why?

The BARBOUR black frame perfectly matches my personality and needs. After experimenting with various frames over the years, I’ve found that rectangular ones suit me best in terms of both personality and appearance. This frame’s professional aesthetic complements my round face shape, adding a touch of angularity that balances my features. It’s versatile enough for everyday wear, whether at work or during casual activities. The sleek black finish harmonizes with my black hair and aligns with the professional image I aim to project. The lightweight titanium construction ensures comfort throughout my busy days at school and work, while the spring hinges provide flexibility and durability. Paired with Superboost single vision lenses, this frame helps me focus on digital devices while reducing eye strain, perfectly aligning with my smart and efficient approach to both my studies and future career. The Barbour frame characterizes my commitment to professionalism and attention to detail, blending functionality with a refined style that reflects my forward-thinking personality.
How would you improve access to expert eye and vision care and is there a vulnerable population that you feel needs attention?
I would focus on expanding mobile eye care services and community outreach programs by bringing eye care directly to underserved areas, especially for those unable to visit clinics, such as individuals in remote communities. Collaborating with local organizations, senior centers, and community centers to offer free or low-cost eye exams every year, along with educational workshops at places like community centers, parks, malls, religious institutions, and supermarkets, can make a significant impact. These could be set up as small kiosks, providing information on eye health and affordable eyewear.
A particularly vulnerable population that needs attention is the elderly, who face barriers such as language, limited mobility, financial constraints, and lack of awareness. Many older adults struggle with mobility issues, making it difficult for them to visit optometrists regularly. Specialized programs providing transportation assistance and home-based eye care services can effectively address these issues and help with the detection of age-related vision problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, which require consistent monitoring.
By targeting these vulnerable populations and removing barriers to access, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, receives the expert eye care they need to maintain their vision and overall well-being.
Congratulations, Ankita—we look forward to seeing your impact on eye health!
