Joseph McElroy: A Passionate Journey in Optometry

Joseph McElroy, a Mobile Optometrist with Specsavers, shares his inspiring journey into the field of optometry.

“I pursued optometry because it perfectly combines my passion for healthcare, problem-solving, and making a tangible impact on people’s lives,” he says.

Having worn glasses since the age of 10, Joseph was familiar with the typical optometrist visit. However, it wasn’t until he attended a UNSW university open day that he realised the rewarding scope of optometry. This realisation set him on a path that would eventually lead him to Specsavers.

While studying optometry, Joseph joined the Campbelltown Specsavers store as an optical assistant. He was looking for weekend work and fellow students had recommended Specsavers for both insight into optometry as a business and to gain valuable optical dispensing experience.

“Luckily for me, my local store was hiring, and I spent my entire time studying while working at the Campbelltown store,” he recalls.

Joseph fell in love with the Campbelltown team and grew to appreciate the values that Specsavers embodies. “I love that Specsavers offers quality and affordable eyecare to all, which is why I pursued a career with them upon graduating,” he explains.

After graduation, Joseph was fortunate to be offered a position as a graduate optometrist at his home store in Campbelltown.

Over time, Joseph has developed his clinical skills and built strong relationships with local patients, GPs, and ophthalmologists.

His latest career development has seen him join the Mobile Optometry Team, a role that allows him to make a meaningful impact in various communities. “Every day brings variety—whether it’s meeting patients with unique eye care needs, adapting to different clinical settings, or working with diverse teams,” he says.

Joseph’s journey at Specsavers has not only allowed him to grow as a clinician but also as a leader. During his time at Campbelltown, he undertook Specsavers’ Pathway development program, which provided valuable insights into leadership.

“It was an eye-opening experience that changed how I interact with others and view myself,” he reflects.

Joseph finds great satisfaction in the problem-solving aspect of optometry, especially when diagnosing and managing eye conditions in areas with limited access to care. “Knowing that my work helps improve someone’s quality of life, whether it’s a child receiving their first pair of glasses or an elderly patient regaining their independence through better vision, is incredibly rewarding,” he says.
