GOC registration guidance
Becoming an Optometrist in the UK
Make your move
If you're an internationally qualified optometrist looking to practise in the UK, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
To get started, you’ll need to register with the General Optical Council (GOC) through their international registration route.
We are here to support you every step of the way.
Getting started
Step 1: Check your eligibility
You’ll need a UK-equivalent optometry degree, at least one year of independent practice in the last 10 years, verified qualifications, and an IELTS score of 7.0 or above.
Step 2: Submit your application
Apply through the GOC International Optometrists portal. The GOC will assess your documents and let you know if you can start the Scheme for Registration or if further training is needed.
Step 3: Complete the Scheme for Registration (if required)
This includes workplace-based assessments, advanced practical evaluations, and a final clinical exam (OSCE). Specsavers is a registered placement provider and can support you throughout this stage.
Top tips for success
- Follow the GOC guidance notes closely
- Submit all required documents, clearly labelled
- Include evidence of CPD, internships, and relevant experience
- Be specific and personal in describing your skills
- Include as much supporting information as possible – it is far better to include too much, than too little
