The role
Are you passionate about designing secure, scalable, and resilient server environments? Do you want to play a key role in shaping the backbone of a global organisation that’s changing lives through better sight and hearing? Specsavers is looking for a Server Platform SME to join our End User & Server Platforms team—and this could be your next big move.
At Specsavers, we’re committed to delivering outstanding value, being loved by every customer, and creating a workplace where colleagues are proud to belong. The End User & Server Platforms team is central to this mission. We’re responsible for the strategic roadmap and delivery of core technical platforms like Telephony, Physical Servers, End User Services, and Microsoft 365. We work closely with architecture teams and third-party partners to ensure our solutions are robust, secure, and future-ready.As part of this team, you’ll be working across regions to support incidents, deliver product development, and test new technologies that can add value to the business. You’ll be joining a team that’s not just maintaining infrastructure—but actively shaping the future of how Specsavers operates. In this role, you’ll be the technical authority for all things server-related.
You’ll design and implement infrastructure solutions across physical, virtual, and hybrid cloud environments. You’ll create and maintain standards and roadmaps for physical server technologies, ensuring consistency, reducing risk, and enabling supportability across the Specsavers estate. You’ll be responsible for the full server lifecycle—from procurement and configuration to patching, maintenance, and decommissioning. You’ll support hybrid cloud strategies, working closely with cloud platform teams to ensure seamless integration and alignment with enterprise goals. You’ll also ensure compliance with security and regulatory standards like GDPR and Cyber Essentials, while maintaining clear documentation and best practices.
This role is highly collaborative. You’ll work with platform teams, application owners, and business units to ensure infrastructure meets performance, cost-efficiency, and compliance objectives. You’ll also act as the escalation point for complex server issues and lead the evaluation and adoption of new technologies that can improve reliability, efficiency, and security.
We’re looking for someone with deep technical knowledge of server infrastructure, including physical servers, virtualization platforms like VMware or Hyper-V, and operating systems such as Windows Server and Linux. You’ll need experience with hybrid cloud platforms like Azure Stack or Nutanix, and a strong grasp of automation tools like PowerShell, Ansible, or Terraform. A solid understanding of server security, backup, and disaster recovery is essential. If you’re also familiar with containerisation technologies like Kubernetes or Docker, observability tools like Splunk or Prometheus, or storage solutions like SAN/NAS, that’s a bonus. But just as important are your personal qualities—you’ll need to be an analytical thinker, a clear communicator, and someone who’s always looking to learn and improve.
