Wales offers the ideal balance between professional growth and personal well-being.
Easy registration process
Thinking about working as an optometrist in Wales? First things first, you need to be listed on the Ophthalmic Performers List (OPL) in Wales. This is essential for delivering Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS) 1 (sight tests and preventative health care through patient management plans) and WGOS 2 (examinations for urgent eye problems).
Here’s how you can get started and deliver WGOS services.
Here's how you can get started
- Step 1: Register with the GOC Make sure you’re registered with the General Optical Council (GOC). This is a must for practicing as an optometrist in the UK.
- Step 2: Contact NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) by emailing nwssp-primarycareservices@wales.nhs.uk. They’ll guide you through the application process for the Ophthalmic Performers List (OPL). You’ll need to provide references from your most recent job, copies of your qualifications, and an up-to-date enhanced DBS check.
- Step 3: Get WGOS accredited You’ll need to attend a foreign body removal workshop and complete some short online modules to get up to speed with the new WGOS contract.
