The Partnership model

“We started Specsavers with one goal in mind: To make a real difference.”

Specsavers began in a spare room, with a table tennis table as a desk and a pioneering idea: to make quality eyewear affordable for everyone. Over 40 years ago, Doug and Mary Perkins, both qualified optometrists, brought this vision to life. At a time when independent optometrists dominated the industry, they set out to do things differently by creating the Specsavers Joint Venture Partnership Business Model – a unique approach to ownership and management. The model transformed the sector, enabling local partners to own and run their businesses with Specsavers, and later expanded to include hearing care as part of its commitment to accessible health services.

In step with store owners who go beyond retail

As a partner, you’ll have significant and unique advantages:

·       Global and local support with strong buying power
·       Fast, reliable supply chain across Europe
·       Access to 1,500+ competitively priced frame styles
·       Support across operations, IT, HR, marketing, legal, finance, recruitment
·       Ongoing workshops, training, and leadership development
·       Local marketing initiatives and output
·       Complete control – no external shareholders

Optometrists and hearing care specialists are transitioning from traditional retail to a more integrated role in healthcare. Specsavers is uniquely positioned to lead this change through investment in clinical training, new technology, and strong partnerships.

In step with support offices that support from behind the scenes

The partnership is fundamental to Specsavers, and our support offices work closely with our partners to keep everything running smoothly.

We’re your go-to team for practical support – whether it’s marketing, communication, or day-to-day operations. As a joint venture partner, you gain more than ownership; you gain a dedicated ally, offering tailored, hands-on support to meet your personal and professional goals and needs.

It’s a brilliant way to be in business. I really enjoy working with people, but I’m not particularly fond of the administrative side of things. That’s where the Support Office steps in. They handle the practical tasks, so I can focus on what truly energises me.

How the partnership model works

Each Specsavers store is an independent limited company – a business you can shape and grow as your own. You’ll have the freedom to lead your team, care for your community, and build a business that reflects your values. Every store operates independently, giving you full ownership of your achievements – all while being supported by the strength, expertise, and resources of the Specsavers brand.

Stores are typically run by two partners – often an optometry and/or audiology professional alongside a retail professional – who share responsibility for performance. As a partner, you’ll receive a competitive salary and a share of the profits, giving you a direct stake in the business.

Profitability depends on local market conditions, customer demand, and the store's operational efficiency. But you’re never on your own. From day one, Specsavers is by your side – offering expert advice, innovative tools, and ongoing support, all for a management fee – so you can build a business you’re proud to lead.

Why it works

Our partnership model is designed for growth and built on trust. You provide the drive – we help you steer the direction. Together, we create something greater than a store: a business that reflects your ambitions, your values and our shared commitment to improving people’s lives.

As a partner, you play a central role in how the business is run: you help shape daily decisions and, with your team, create the customer experience that defines the company.
