“It’s such an important role” – Mia talks all things Clinical Lead

Mia started her journey with Specsavers in an admin role and, after completing the Hearing Aid Dispenser Apprenticeship with the support of her store directors, fast-forward a few years and she is now a qualified Hearing Aid Dispenser and Clinical Lead at Specsavers Peterborough. I spoke with Mia to learn more about the Clinical Lead position and how it’s offered her an opportunity to grow professionally and clinically since qualification.
The day-to-day
As a Clinical Lead, Mia's overall aim is to ensure that all clinical colleagues are performing to a high standard. Each quarter, the focus is on a different clinical competency; whether it's testing, to guidelines, or other essential skills. Mia compiles the necessary information, hosts training sessions, and conducts peer-to-peer reviews. It's all about making sure the team is on the ball and providing the best care possible.
Taking on the role
When the prospect of the position first came up, Mia had recently fully qualified. "I was a bit like, I don't know whether I'm putting too much on my plate." However, after attending a training course hosted by the Audiology Clinical Performance Consultant (CPC) for her area, she realised that she was ready for the challenge. Even today, Mia knows she’s never on her own; she has the support and expertise of her CPC and other clinical leads in her area to call on, in the case of a more complex situation.
Growing your professional skills
The role also involves taking on leadership responsibilities that Mia never thought she had. "I didn't think I had the ability to do presentations or training," she admits. "But now, I'm delivering training to my director and observing them which is a bit strange! But it's also incredibly rewarding." In those settings, Mia explains, despite them being the business owner, we’re all just clinicians working together to ensure we’re delivering the best quality care for our patients.
The perfect way to take the next step
Mia now feels more confident standing up delivering clinical training sessions. She explains that being able to progress into the clinical lead role is a great option for audiologists looking for another focus alongside clinics. "It's taking that step away from the sometimes-repetitive nature of clinic work," she explains. "It's showcasing your leadership skills and taking on responsibility." This role is perfect for those who want to develop their skills and take on new challenges. "I really look forward to my clinical lead days."
She also says that her additional clinical focus means she’s ensuring her own clinical skills are kept up to the highest level as well. “It's a chance to get everything in order and make sure we're providing the best care possible.”
