From first role to leadership: Ashleigh’s growth in Oban

About 10 years ago now, Ashleigh left a role in retail and was looking for something different. A fresh challenge that still drew on her 10 years of customer service experience. What she found was more than a job; it was a community, a career path, and a lifestyle she wouldn’t trade for anything.
“I started at Specsavers Oban as an Optical Assistant,” Ashleigh recalls. “I’d seen an advert, applied, and within days I was working in store. I loved the idea of doing something different, and the progression opportunities really stood out.”
And progress she did. Over the years, Ashleigh completed certifications in dispensing, trained as a Hearing Care Assistant (HCA), where she dipped her toes into the world of audiology. Today, she’s the Store Manager, leading a close-knit team of around 20 people. But what makes Specsavers special for her isn’t just the career growth-it’s the support.
“I’ve never worked for a company as supportive as Specsavers,” she says. “Our directors have always encouraged us to learn and grow. If you make a mistake, it’s not the end of the world. It’s a human approach, and that makes all the difference.”
Why Oban?
Ashleigh’s story isn’t just about Specsavers- it’s about Oban, too. For Ashleigh, who grew up here, Oban offers something she couldn’t find in the city.
“I went to college in Glasgow for a year, but it was so busy and expensive,” she explains. “Coming back to Oban felt right. It’s a small community where you know everyone-or at least someone who knows someone. People are friendly, and the views are incredible.”
And those views? They’re hard to beat. The Specsavers store looks out over Oban Bay, so every day starts with a scene that could be straight out of a postcard. On sunny days, Ashleigh says, “It’s like being abroad.” Add in beaches, woodland walks, and hills with panoramic views, and you’ve got a town that’s perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors. Even Harry Potter fans will be thrilled-the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct is just a short drive away.
A great place to live and work
For families, Oban is a dream. “It’s a brilliant place to raise kids,” Ashleigh says. “There’s a real community feel, and so much to do.” Work-life balance is another big plus. Ashleigh works Monday to Friday, finishing early most days so she can pick up her children. “I couldn’t ask for better balance,” she says. “Our directors really value personal life.”
Social life? The team makes time for that too, with dinners and get-togethers that help new arrivals feel at home. “It’s a very close team,” Ashleigh says. “We look out for each other.”
Thinking about making the move?
If you’re considering a career with Specsavers- or even a move to Oban- Ashleigh has one piece of advice: take the leap.
“It’s always daunting moving somewhere new, but Oban makes it easy,” she says. “Everyone’s so friendly, and there’s so much to do if you love the outdoors. If you’re tired of the busy city life, this is a risk worth taking.”
And with Specsavers, you’re not just getting a job- you’re joining a company that invests in you. Whether you’re starting as an Optical Assistant or aiming for management, the opportunities are there. As Ashleigh puts it: “I never thought I’d become a manager, but here I am. Specsavers gave me the chance, and I grabbed it.”
