My hearing loss inspired my audiology career

When Sophie Ward joined Specsavers as a lab technician apprentice, she had no idea it would lead to a career in audiology. Today, as Customer Service Director for Romford Audiology Domiciliary, Sophie combines her own experience of hearing loss, her passion for helping people and her commitment to improving access to care. Her journey is proof that sometimes the opportunities you least expect can lead to the most rewarding careers.

I never set out to work in audiology

“I was working in a retail homeware store, and, for various reasons, I knew I needed a change. I was applying for lots of apprenticeships and, if I'm honest, when Specsavers got back to me, I didn't really know what I'd applied for. I just knew I wanted a fresh start.

The role was for a lab technician apprentice. I'd never heard of it before, but it sounded interesting. After my interview, I was invited in for a trial shift alongside another candidate. I picked things up quickly, built a good rapport with the supervisor and was offered the role shortly afterwards. From day one, I loved it.

I completed the two-year apprenticeship and, during my first year, my lab manager left. Suddenly, I found myself becoming one of the most experienced people in the lab much earlier than expected. I threw myself into learning and achieved a distinction with a perfect score in my apprenticeship.

I stayed in the lab for four years and genuinely enjoyed the work, but eventually I started thinking about what was next. I loved Specsavers and didn't want to leave, but I was ready for a fresh challenge and wanted to develop my customer-facing skills.

That's when audiology started to catch my attention.

My personal connection to hearing care

Hearing care had always been part of my life.

I was diagnosed with partial hearing loss when I was four years old. One of my strongest memories is getting my first hearing aids and hearing birds properly for the first time. I remember asking my mum what the noise was because I'd never heard it so clearly before.

At the same time, everyday sounds suddenly felt incredibly loud. Things like lorries reversing could be overwhelming because I wasn't used to hearing them properly. Over time, I adapted, but those early experiences stayed with me.

School was relatively straightforward at first, but as I got older, there were times when people picked on me because I wore hearing aids. Like many young people, I worried about standing out. Eventually, though, I realised that wearing hearing aids didn't define me. If anything, those experiences helped shape the person I am today.

I've always believed that hearing aids shouldn't stop anyone from doing what they love. I danced for years and never let hearing loss hold me back. In many ways, you become your own biggest obstacle if you let fear stand in your way.

Discovering audiology as a career choice

One of the reasons I became interested in audiology was because of the people around me.

When I first joined Specsavers, I became good friends with a trainee audiologist and watched his journey into the profession. I'd also been supported by audiologists my whole life because of my own hearing loss. The more I learned about the role, the more interested I became.

I started asking questions, observing wherever I could and building my knowledge. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to train in wax removal while taking on a dual role that combined audiology and customer-facing responsibilities.

That's when everything started to click.

I realised I wanted to understand hearing loss more deeply, not just for myself, but so I could help other people navigate their own journeys too.

Why domiciliary care felt like home

A former colleague who I'd previously worked alongside moved into domiciliary audiology and, around a year later, approached me about joining him.

The moment he explained what the role involved, I knew it was something I wanted to be part of. My connection to domiciliary care goes beyond my professional experience. My sister is completely bedbound, so I've seen first-hand how difficult it can be for people to access healthcare services when they can't leave home. I've also watched my mum work tirelessly to secure the support and care my sister needs.

Because of that, I understand the value of bringing healthcare directly to people's homes.

When the opportunity came to help launch Romford Audiology Domiciliary, it combined everything I cared about: hearing care, supporting vulnerable patients and building meaningful relationships with people. It felt like the perfect fit.

Making a difference every day

Now, as Customer Service Director for Audiology Domiciliary, I'm incredibly proud of the impact we make.

For many patients, getting to a store simply isn't possible. Whether it's because of mobility challenges, illness or complex care needs, accessing hearing care can become a real struggle. So being able to provide that care in people's own homes means we can remove barriers and make a genuine difference to their quality of life.

My own hearing loss also helps me connect with patients. While every experience is different, I understand many of the emotions that come with hearing loss and adjusting to hearing aid technology.

One patient I worked with loved singing in a choir but had become increasingly worried because he couldn't hear the music properly. We spoke about my own journey, and I reassured him that hearing aid technology could make a real difference. After receiving support and hearing technology, he was able to enjoy singing again. He later sent me a card to thank me.

Moments like that are incredibly special. It's not just about hearing better. It's about helping people reconnect with the things they love.

Looking back

If I could go back and speak to my younger self, I'd simply say: trust yourself.

I'd love to have some grand piece of inspirational advice, but the truth is that every experience, good and bad, has helped make me who I am.

I wouldn't be where I am today without those challenges, the lessons I've learned or the people who've supported me along the way.

Everything has led me here”.
