Partnerships at Specsavers: Growing as an individual and a business

"I've got a lot to give the business to help us grow and make us the provider of choice."
I've been part of the Specsavers family for almost 20 years. I qualified as an audiologist 12 years ago and have been an audiology partner for the past three. We’re a very busy store optically, and we’re now getting more audiology patients thanks to our self-referral scheme. This has been a game changer for our store and the patients we care for. It means that anyone – as long as they have their NHS number and are registered with a GP surgery in our area – can receive a hearing assessment and fitting of hearing aids (if necessary). All on the NHS, for free. This means we can provide our service to those who can’t necessarily afford private care, and we instantly become more inclusive for our wider community.
Navigating the world of partnership
As a partner, I have to be on top of everything in regard to the day to day running of the business, whilst keeping an eye on costs. Having that additional responsibility can push me further and create opportunities for myself and my store. Even though the work is challenging at times, it’s great to be able to have that voice. I work very closely with the members of my team to ensure everyone has what they need to do their jobs and they’re up to speed with everything we’re doing. I also have a good support network if I feel the need to discuss things further.
Building the best store possible
I'm not alone in my partnership role. I have three other partners, Steven who is our Retail Director, and Ash and Cian who are Ophthalmic Directors. As a store, we’ve gone through some challenging times, but we are all very focused on ensuring our colleagues are happy, and we’re giving our customers the best experience possible. I’m a relatively new partner at Specsavers and there are many more experienced than me, but I think sometimes having that new approach makes a difference. So for me, it’s about building the business further and progressing together to reach our full potential. This includes making sure our colleagues continue to feel supported, and educating our customers about all the different services we have to offer. We’re a community, a family, and we’re always listening to feedback on how we can progress and improve.
Celebrating wins...in every way
We had our third-year celebration on the 1st of February. We were unable to celebrate the initial opening of our business as a Hub in 2021, because of the COVID lockdown. For this celebration, I contacted local businesses who provided a balloon arch and celebration cakes for our colleagues and customers to enjoy. There was a buzz around the store, the staff loved it, and it felt really good to have been able to provide that.
I’m incredibly proud of my journey so far at Specsavers. I really enjoy my job as an audiologist, and having the opportunity to make a difference as a partner has been incredible. Creating the great business we have within three years is an amazing achievement. I know there will always be areas to improve upon, but it’s a journey and I’m happy and prepared to listen and learn from others, taking opportunities when I can. There’s more to do, but I’m looking forward to it.
