The power of self directed learning

Where it all began
It started at university where I studied Computer Science. I took a year out on placement as a Data Analyst at an insurance firm. This gave my studies real world context and sparked my interest in data analysis.
The transition to life at Specsavers
After working in web development for a few years, I applied to be on Specsavers' New Talent Programme. It provided a crash course on the business and opened two job opportunities in different areas of the organisation.
I started off in audiology operations, then moved into a planning and project management role. The programme gave me so much exposure to the organisation. It also helped me refine my skills in presenting and collaboration.
At the end of the programme, a role in the global data team came up. The learning accelerated and DataCamp played a big part in my early success. I studied on DataCamp every day during the first few months in the role, eventually passing the data analysts certifications.
Learning is key
I've been to conferences on data visualisations and women in data events to keep on top of my skills. Constant learning is key.
Recently I've moved into a data business analyst role to challenge myself even further. I very much believe in learning by doing! As part of my new role, I'd like to explore skills I haven't been exposed to yet, like people management.
I'm also passionate about diversity and inclusion. During my time on the talent programme, I set up colleague network group for gender inclusivity, with the aim to empower women. Being the founder of an employee network brought it's own challenges which I learnt to overcome. Being co-chair has taught me so many skills, from negotiating to adaptability. I was also fortunate enough to be exposed to courses on things like unconscious bias and leadership training.
Jess' advice during learning at work week
Throughout my career I've used many tools like Insights and Now, Discover Your Strengths, which can help you discover the best way that you learn. I'd recommend understanding how you take in information and using that to your advantage. Then let your curiosity take you forward.
