'A diagnosis didn't change who I am': Matt's story

Written byNikkie Stanley
Posting date: 12 Oct 2026

For most of his life, Matt felt different, but he couldn't explain why.

Now 32, Matt has spent nearly 13 years working as a Dispensing Optician. After decades of struggling without understanding why, and years of trying to identify what felt like a "missing link", he received an ADHD diagnosis in July this year.

Looking back, the signs had always been there.

Forgetting everyday tasks, becoming distracted halfway through a job and struggling with organisation often left Matt feeling frustrated and affected his confidence.

"I didn't realise ADHD could look like my experience, and it was causing me a lot of stress, frustration, and self-confidence issues," says Matt.

Taking the first step

After learning more about ADHD and connecting with others who shared similar experiences, Matt decided to pursue an assessment through the Right to Choose pathway. Even as the appointment approached, he still had doubts.

"Part of me worried that I was wrong, and that I'd spent years looking for an explanation that wasn't there."

When the diagnosis came, the first thing he felt was relief.

"There was a reason why I felt like an outsider on 'normal' things, why I struggled to deal with basic chores and tasks, and why I struggled with my memory and organisation. I wasn't lazy or going crazy, there was a reason."

Recognising strengths at work

Since then, Matt has reflected on how ADHD has shaped not only the challenges he's faced, but also some of the strengths he brings to work.

"It's easy to focus on the challenges that come with ADHD, but since my diagnosis, I've also spent time recognising some of the strengths it brings. While ADHD undoubtedly affected both my training and career as a Dispensing Optician, I also think it's played a part in why I've stayed so passionate about optics for nearly 13 years."

That passion shows in the way he approaches learning and problem-solving.

"I can happily disappear into a CPD article about Myopia Management for hours and then recall huge chunks of it if someone asks a question later."

Looking ahead

Matt is still learning what works best for him, but he's grateful for the support he's received along the way.

"Thankfully, my store has been amazing in their support, and I can't thank them enough."

This ADHD Awareness Month, Matt hopes sharing his story helps others better understand themselves or someone they care about.

"So, after 32 years of wondering why I felt different, a diagnosis didn't change who I am. It simply helped me to find myself again."
