From college to clinical tech...and beyond

Ellie Long, Apprentice Optical Assistant, tells us about her apprenticeship journey so far, and how she went from leaving college to joining Specsavers with no optics knowledge, having now completed a clinical tech qualification.

My college experience

"My journey began at college, where I initially pursued A Levels in psychology and English literature. Despite my mum's suggestion that an apprenticeship might suit me better, I was determined to try college first. However, I soon realised that college wasn't the right fit for me, leaving me uncertain about my next steps.

Discovering Specsavers

My mum continued to encourage me to consider apprenticeships, sending me various options. It wasn't until I came across the Specsavers apprenticeship that I felt a spark of interest. The role of Apprentice Optical Assistant sounded local, intriguing, and full of potential. After applying online, I went through a phone interview, an in-store interview, and a trial day, which confirmed my enthusiasm for the role.

Support and growth

Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve received immense support from my store colleagues, the support office teams, and the apprenticeship teams. I appreciate the regular meetings and learning sessions, which have helped me define my career goals and plan my next steps. I’ve never felt pressured and always have someone to turn to for help.

Achieving the Clinical Tech qualification

One of my proudest moments was completing my clinical tech qualification. This in-depth pre-screening course provided me with extensive knowledge about eye conditions and enhanced my ability to deliver high-quality customer service. The course boosted my confidence significantly, and I feel more prepared to answer customer questions and provide excellent service.

Daily progress and future goals

I find pride in my daily achievements, no matter how small. My apprenticeship has helped me define my career goals, and I plan to pursue further qualifications, including Cert 4 (BTEC level 4) and then on to do the Dispensing Optician apprenticeship. My passion for optics is strong, and I am committed to continuing my journey in this field.

A supportive work environment

I feel more at home at work than anywhere else, thanks to the amazing team at Specsavers. The supportive environment and friendships among colleagues make every day enjoyable and fulfilling. I’m trusted by customers and colleagues alike, and I love helping people with their optical needs.

Looking ahead

I am excited about my future in optics and am eager to progress both in clinical and leadership roles. My journey from college to completing my apprenticeship and clinical tech qualification has been transformative, and I am ready to take on new challenges and opportunities in the optical industry.

My story is a testament to the power of perseverance, support, and passion in shaping a successful career. My journey with Specsavers has not only equipped me with valuable skills but also instilled a deep love for optics that I am eager to pursue further!"

Apprenticeships

If, like Ellie, you're in education and don't know which way to turn, or perhaps you're at a crossroads in your life looking for a new direction - look no further than an apprenticeship with Specsavers.
