“College didn’t click” – How Amelia found her perfect fit through an apprenticeship

When Amelia left school, she thought she had her next steps all planned out. Like many of her friends, she enrolled in college to study travel and tourism. But after an induction week and just one full day in class, she realised something important: college wasn’t for her. The transition from school to college felt overwhelming, and the classroom environment didn’t suit her learning style.
That turning point led Amelia to discover a completely different path; one that would kick-start her career and give her the hands-on experience she craved. Today, she’s thriving as an Optical Assistant Apprentice at Specsavers.
I learn better by doing
"I’ve always been someone who likes to get stuck in and do the work rather than sit in a classroom writing notes. When I realised college wasn’t for me, I felt a bit lost. My auntie has worked at Specsavers for 20 years, and she got me a part-time weekend job on the shop floor. One day, the store manager asked how college was going. I was honest - it wasn’t working out. That’s when she suggested an apprenticeship as an option.
At first, I wasn’t sure. I didn’t know much about apprenticeships, apart from hearing friends talk about apprenticeships in joinery or hairdressing. I didn’t know they did them for retail jobs. But after speaking to my parents and thinking about what I really wanted, I decided to go for it. It was the best decision I’ve made.
Life as an Apprentice Optical Assistant
My role is so varied, which I love. When the store opens, customers come in for eye tests or to collect their glasses. I greet them, carry out pre-tests, and help with collections and repairs. After the test, I get to do single lens dispensing. No two days are the same; there’s always someone new coming in, and it gets really busy after school hours. It’s hands-on, practical, and I’m learning every day.
Balancing work and study
I spend Mondays and Thursdays doing two hours of study each day. Breaking it into small chunks works best for me because I concentrate better that way. Specsavers is really flexible and supportive, which makes it easier to manage both.
Support that makes a difference
The support I get is incredible. My colleagues always take time to explain things, and I feel comfortable asking questions. My managers are so approachable - if I have any problems, they’re there to help. I also have an apprentice coach who visits me in store, observes my work, and checks in regularly. If I ever need her, she’s just a call away. I never feel alone. Why I’d recommend an apprenticeship
If you’re thinking about an apprenticeship, go for it. The support you get is amazing, and you learn so much - not just job skills, but life skills like time management and confidence. School can feel like a safety blanket and leaving it is daunting. But an apprenticeship gives you a real view of the world and sets you up for the future.
I’m already thinking about what’s next. I’ve spoken to my coach about doing a Dispensing Optician apprenticeship because it looks so interesting. Apprenticeships open doors, and they give you the support you need to succeed”.
Choosing an apprenticeship
An apprenticeship at Specsavers is a smart first choice for anyone at any age, role, or stage of life, because it offers paid, hands‑on training, nationally recognised qualifications, and real opportunities to grow in a supportive, people‑focused environment. Whether you're starting fresh, switching careers, or looking to develop new skills, Specsavers provides a clear path to success with guidance from experts who genuinely want you to thrive.
