How Iulia-Corina can achieve her dream job via an apprenticeship

When Iulia-Corina Tranca joined Specsavers in 2021 as a Data Protection Administrator, she never imagined that in just a few years she’d be on the path to qualifying as a solicitor. Today, as a Trainee Solicitor currently seconded to Newmedica, Iulia is living proof that apprenticeships can be the best of both worlds - combining hands-on experience with professional qualifications.
Life before Specsavers
“I moved to the UK in 2017 to study, always dreaming of a career in law. I wanted to be a lawyer - Harvey Specter from Suits was my inspiration. I completed my law degree just as COVID hit, which meant I couldn’t move to a university offering the LPC route to qualify. So, I decided to do a master’s in HR Management instead to broaden my skill set.
While studying, I was eager to gain legal experience. I had the qualifications but no practical exposure. I worked on a zero-hour contract and applied for legal roles, but opportunities were limited. Then I saw Specsavers hiring for a Data Protection Administrator. The role caught my attention; it paid more than other entry-level positions and, although it was a contractor role, there was a big chance of becoming permanent. I joined in 2021, and soon after, Specsavers offered me a permanent position. I was thrilled! My role then evolved into Legal Administrator as the team grew, and Specsavers stayed true to their word and delivered everything they promised.
Growing at Specsavers
In my role, I gained invaluable experience in data protection from my amazing colleagues. Specsavers even funded my Foundation and Practitioner courses in Data Protection. Over time, my responsibilities grew, taking on more complex work, joining projects, and stepping outside my remit to gain exposure. Many companies say they grow their people, but Specsavers really does! I developed an appetite for learning and wanted to keep pushing forward.
Why I chose an apprenticeship
Qualifying has always been the goal, and finding out you can do this via an apprenticeship route was a revelation. Even though I already had a law degree, I could still get the funding to do this apprenticeship, as it is a fast-track, modern way to qualify as a solicitor. It combines hands-on experience with the Solicitors Qualifying Exams — something new and exciting. Plus, being able to gain qualifying work experience while studying is invaluable. Specsavers funds the program, which is a huge relief because it’s expensive and time-consuming otherwise. I didn’t have to drop to an apprenticeship wage either, which makes it even better. Right now, I’m seconded to Newmedica to gain broader experience across both businesses. It’s an incredible opportunity where I get to work with established and highly successful lawyers.
Balancing work and study
I work four days a week and dedicate one day to study. My role mirrors what a trainee solicitor does day-to-day, so I’m learning on the job while preparing for exams. If I’d gone the traditional route, I’d still need a training contract for several years. This way, it’s just 18 months thanks to my degree, and it’s completely feasible to balance work and study. It truly is the best of both worlds: earning while learning, gaining real experience, and building relationships in an established role.
Support that makes it possible
Specsavers has been incredibly supportive. I can choose my study day and have flexibility when needed. My benefits and rewards remain the same, and I have regular check-ins with my manager, head of department, and legal director who is my supervisor, to ensure I stay on track and supported throughout this process. The whole team has been incredibly supportive, making my transition into this new journey smooth and positive. During my secondment at Newmedica, I’ve had the privilege of working with an exceptional lawyer, gaining hands-on experience that goes far beyond what you’d learn at university. I feel fortunate to collaborate with different teams and look forward to working with more colleagues across the Legal Department soon.
Why I recommend apprenticeships
If you’re thinking about upskilling, an apprenticeship is the best way to do it. You gain practical experience, learn from qualified professionals, and have the space to grow without added pressure. You stay on your current wage, get to know the business inside out, and even experience other teams, like my secondment at Newmedica. When I qualify, I’ll have a well-rounded perspective. It’s a big commitment, but worth every bit of effort. Growing up, I didn’t know how good apprenticeships were - they’re infinitely better than the classic routes. If you want to get ahead in your career, this is the way to do it!"
Upskill with Specsavers
Choose a career in support office and, like Iulia-Corina, you could have the chance to upskill via an apprenticeship. It's the best way to learn while you earn, and benefit from on-the-job experience to gain some valuable experience that supports your studies.
