“It felt like the perfect fit”: Malaika’s journey from apprentice to Optical Assistant

Discover how Malaika Khan turned her love for healthcare into an optical career through a Specsavers apprenticeship - now working as an Optical Assistant and setting her sights on become an Optometrist.
Finding the right path
For Malaika Khan, choosing an apprenticeship at Specsavers was more than just about starting a career- it was about finding a path that matched her strengths and passions.
“I’ve always been more of a practical, hands-on learner. Academic study never really suited me.”
When she found the apprenticeship opportunity on the Specsavers website, it felt right. With a strong interest in healthcare and a want to help people, the apprenticeship offered everything she was looking for.
“It was everything I wanted in a career, so I took it as a sign and applied.”
Learning through experience
Fresh out of school, Malaika was exploring her options in the healthcare profession. The apprenticeship gave her the chance to learn while gaining real-world experience in a clinical setting.
Her day-to-day role involved assisting customers with fittings and adjustments, supporting optometrists with pre-screening, and learning about lenses, frames and optical health.
“When I started, I knew very little about optics. But by the end, I had gained so much knowledge- even more than some colleagues who had been in the role longer.”
A proud achievement
In May 2025, Malaika completed her apprenticeship with a Distinction- an achievement she’s incredibly proud of.
“Achieving a Distinction after all the hard work I put in was the most rewarding part. It’s amazing to look back and see how far I’ve come.”
Now working as an Optical Assistant in Bedford, she’s continuing her development by studying for her BTEC Level 4 Certificate in Optical Dispensing. Her long-term goal is to become a fully qualified Optometrist.
Support every step of the way
Malaika credits the support she’s received from her team at Specsavers as a key part of her success.
“From my directors and managers to my colleagues, everyone has encouraged and guided me. It’s a really supportive environment.”
She also gives special thanks to her apprenticeship coach, Abbie Stacey.
“Abbie was phenomenal throughout my training. She genuinely cared about helping me improve and succeed.”
The structured nature of the programme helped Malaika stay organised and motivated throughout her journey.
Growing personally and professionally
Beyond the technical skills, Malaika’s apprenticeship helped her grow in confidence and independence.
“It’s shaped me into a mature and independent woman. It’s even given me the confidence to achieve personal goals- like buying my own car at 18.”
She’s passionate about encouraging others to consider the apprenticeship route.
“I would absolutely recommend it. It’s such a rewarding way to learn, gain hands-on experience, build confidence and earn a qualification.”
Looking ahead
With her sights set on becoming a Dispensing Optician and eventually an Optometrist, Malaika is excited about what’s next.
“I’m proud of how far I’ve come- and I’m even more excited about where I’m going.”
