From shop floors to scenic shores: Peter Taylor's story

Peter Taylor shares how he found a fulfilling optometry career and a strong sense of community in Elgin, thanks to its natural beauty, supportive team, and patient-focused care.
“In 2000, my wife Sinead and I moved to Ireland. I was working in electrical retail, but I was excited about a new opportunity out there: managing a Specsavers store” shares Peter, retail director at Specsavers Elgin. “It was Specsavers’ focus on patients, commitment to clinical excellence, and unique business model really appealed to me.”
It all just felt right
“Fast forward to 2003, we were thinking about moving back to the UK. We moved to Glasgow, but the prices of businesses in the central belt were very high. That’s why I couldn’t turn down the chance to own a store in Elgin when the opportunity popped up. I had already been approved for Partnership and we knew the area through a friend we went to Uni with, Ruth Knox, who is now my business partner. It all just felt right. Like the perfect place to raise our family and build a meaningful career.
“It’s a dream for anyone who loves the outdoors because it’s surrounded by beautiful beaches, lush woodlands, and it is close to the Cairngorms. Plus, the microclimate here means more sunshine and drier weather, which is always a win! While it may not have the bustling nightlife or dining options of a big city, it provides a fulfilling career and a sense of belonging.”
With community, comes loyalty
“But it’s not just the natural environment that makes living and working in Elgin special—it’s the sense of community. In a smaller town like Elgin, you get the chance to build real, lasting relationships with your patients. I’ve found this very rewarding. Our patients are loyal, often willing to wait weeks to see their preferred optometrist because they value the personalised care we provide.
Working in Elgin also means being part of a close-knit team. Lots of the team have worked here for over a decade, which is rare in this industry. This loyalty and stability create a work environment where everyone knows and supports each other, making it easier to deliver the best care possible.”
