From Zoology to Optometry - a journey of discovery
James Roberts recently celebrated a significant milestone in his career journey by achieving a distinction in his Lab Technician Apprenticeship. Adding to this achievement, he has been accepted into Cardiff University to study Optometry. He tells us his story so far.
Before joining Specsavers:
“My journey began with a degree in Zoology. I chose this path because of my love for animals and anatomy. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted my university experience, and I found myself less enthusiastic about the research and conservation roles that my degree typically led to. Despite these challenges, I graduated with a respectable 2:1.
After graduation, I started applying for entry-level jobs like bar work, retail etc, eager to move out and gain independence. Unfortunately, I faced numerous rejections. It was during this time that I stumbled upon a Lab Tech Apprenticeship role at Specsavers. Intrigued by the opportunity, I applied and was thrilled to be accepted. The apprenticeship was relocated to Reading, where I excelled, achieving 100% in my coursework and passing with distinction”.
Choosing an apprenticeship:
“When asked why I chose to do an apprenticeship, I explained that my degree had provided me with valuable lab work experience and transferable skills, particularly in maths. However, I realised that I didn't want to continue down the path my degree had set. The apprenticeship offered a practical, hands-on approach to learning, which appealed to me far more than traditional academic routes”.
Support from Specsavers:
“Throughout my apprenticeship, I found the support from the Reading store to be exceptional. The knowledgeable coaches were always responsive and helpful, making my learning experience both enjoyable and enriching. This support was crucial in helping me succeed and feel confident in my new career path”.
Career goals:
“My ultimate goal is to complete a four-year integrated master's degree in Optometry. My love for anatomy and my newfound passion for optometry has given me a clear direction for my future. The apprenticeship not only provided me with the skills and knowledge I needed but also helped me realise that optometry was the right path for me. With partial sponsorship from Specsavers, I plan to work at the Reading store throughout the summer, gaining even more experience in the field”.
Advice for aspiring Apprentices:
“For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I have some valuable advice: "Don't be afraid to take a different path if your initial plan doesn't work out. Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity to gain practical experience and discover what you're truly passionate about. The support from Specsavers has been incredible, and there are so many pathways to pursue within the company. I highly recommend it!"
James's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of finding a career that truly excites you. With his dedication and the support of Specsavers, there's no doubt that James has a bright future ahead in the field of optometry.
