Celebrating National Payroll Week
Payroll might happen behind the scenes, but it’s at the heart of every organisation. Our Payroll Services team is a mix of problem-solvers, people champions, and process perfectionists. To celebrate National Payroll Week, we asked them a few questions to uncover what makes their roles so rewarding:
From first payslip to payroll pro
Sadie: "I’ve been part of the payroll team for 26 years, growing my career over time and continuing to enjoy the challenges and rewards that come with it."
Claire: "Over 20 years! I fell into payroll without giving it a thought, and it’s become my career ever since."
Jason: "I’ve been with Specsavers for 18 years, 15 of those in payroll."
Michelle: "I’ve been in payroll for over six and a half years, currently leading the Payroll Services Team in Guernsey."
Payroll with purpose
Cheryl: "I love working closely with the accounts team and seeing how payroll impacts financial reporting. I’m always looking for ways to improve our services and enhance knowledge across the wider team."
Rhiannon: "I love the payroll detective work - digging into the details, solving problems, and improving processes”
Lucy: "Supporting colleagues and resolving employee queries gives my work a strong sense of purpose."
Jason: "No two days are ever the same! I’m passionate about continuous improvement and team development."
What keeps us going?
Emma: "People! Whether it’s guiding a colleague or navigating HMRC, I’m all about connection and collaboration."
Julie: "It’s challenging, demanding, and incredibly fulfilling. I take pride in being part of a function that’s essential to every organisation."
Sadie: "No day is ever the same in payroll—there’s always something new to tackle, which keeps me focused and interested."
Michelle: "I thrive on the problem-solving aspect and love the satisfaction of getting things right for colleagues across the business.
Paths to payroll
Liv: "I came to Support Office from store, previously working in the Contact Lens department. Now I help colleagues navigate expenses and benefits."
Joy: "I’ve worked across Store Reporting, Finance, Distribution, and Legal before finding my passion in payroll post-pandemic."
Claire: "I’ve tried moving away from the industry before, but somehow it always pulls me back!"
Milestones that matter
Rich: "I completed my Foundation Degree in Payroll Management this August—a huge milestone for me!"
Sadie: "I’m incredibly proud of the dedicated and resilient team I work with every day."
Cheryl: "Joining the wider management group has helped me strengthen cross-functional relationships and raise awareness of how payroll impacts financial reporting."
Jason: "Celebrating National Payroll Week is a great reminder of the vital role payroll plays and I’m proud to be part of it."
Whether they’re solving complex queries, streamlining systems, or supporting colleagues across the business, our team make payroll more personal.
