"The most fulfilling part of my role is having the time to connect with patients"

Hi, I’m Alan 👋
I grew up on the southside of Glasgow and I’m currently the Lead Optometrist at Specsavers in Sauchiehall Street.
How did I get here?
To be honest, I was never entirely sure that optometry would be my future. I’d always had an interest in human biology, but it was only really in the process of completing my UCAS applications that I added optometry to my choices and after receiving an offer from Glasgow Caledonian University, attending an open day, I haven’t looked back since!
After completing my Pre-reg placement in 2024 under the guidance of my directors Sarah and Arlene, I joined the store permanently and became the lead optometrist in January of this year.
What keeps me going?
The most fulfilling part of my role is having the time to connect with patients one-on-one and support something as essential as their vision.
My next challenge is around furthering my clinical knowledge. I’ve enrolled in the Independent Prescribing (IP) qualification earlier this year. If I’m successful in achieving that, I’ll be one of the youngest people to do so in Scotland!
But more importantly for me, I’ll be able to manage a wider range of eye conditions in store, helping to reduce the pressure on NHS eye care facilities even more so, while providing care and advice for those who come to see us.
Why Specsavers?
Being an optometrist with Specsavers is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that even a small interaction can have a lasting impact on someone’s quality of life is what motivates me every day.
I’ve always wanted a career with purpose and progression, and that’s exactly what I’ve found. There’s a clear path forward, and you’re encouraged to take ownership of it. Whether it’s clinical excellence, leadership, or broader business knowledge, you’re given the tools to shape your own future.
For me, Specsavers isn’t just a place to work — it’s where I’ve been able to build a career I’m proud of, with a team at every level that genuinely wants to see me succeed.
What’s next for me?
My directors Arlene and Sarah are an inspiration to me. They’ve given so much to this community, making a difference in people’s lives for many years. They take it upon themselves to develop all members of their team.
I’m passionate about becoming a partner at Specsavers in the future. The thoughts of being in a position to have a positive impact on more people’s lives and providing care to my community is something that resonates with me on so many levels.
