Challenging the stereotype of tech being a man's world

After graduating in Computer Networks, Tamila started her career in technology as a Junior IT Clerk. Now, proudly working as a Technology Customer Service Improvement & Knowledge Analyst at Specsavers, she’s challenging the stereotype of technology being a man’s world.

“My name is Tamila Butler. Originally from Georgetown, Guyana, I moved to the UK in 2005 to be with my husband who serves in the Royal Navy. Today, I proudly work as a Technology Customer Service Improvement and Knowledge Analyst at Specsavers.

Life before Specsavers

Before Specsavers, I worked part-time as a hospitality receptionist while studying at University - I have a genuine passion for technology so I studied Computer Networks. I got my first job in tech when I joined the data processing department at a bank as a Junior IT Clerk. I also owned and managed two small businesses outside of this, so it’s safe to say I’ve always been career focused and very driven.

My journey so far

I successfully applied and interviewed for a Technology Customer Service Desk Analyst position at Specsavers which was right up my street, given my knowledge, skills, and interests in technology. I was offered the role, and I held this position for nine months. During this time, I gained extensive business knowledge which has proven to be invaluable for my development and worked closely with various stores and contractors to resolve issues, identify defects, and find ways to continuously improve the Service Desk. With my ambitious nature, I wanted to progress and so I was excited to be awarded the role of Improvement and Knowledge Analyst. This role was really interesting as I was actively involved in reviewing, developing, and revitalising all knowledge articles provided to the service desk to enhance their effectiveness and productivity.

When a position for another Knowledge Analyst specifically for Socrates Cloud Evolution (SCE) became available, I knew I had to go for it. I was so pleased to be offered the role which I’m still in today. In my role, I create knowledge articles for Analysts to triage issues in SCE stores. I also had the privilege of being present at the launch of the first SCE store in ROI which was a fantastic experience, and it deepened my understanding of the technology and service delivery for SCE.

Being supported to reach my full potential

Specsavers has been incredibly supportive of my development. My manager has played a pivotal role in my growth, offering guidance, and suggesting other roles that align with my interests to support my career progression. He also arranged for a mentor to help guide my career. The company provides various opportunities for learning and advancement, ensuring that colleagues reach their full potential.

I’m proud to be a woman in tech

I’m proud to be a woman in tech because it allows me to break down the stereotypes of technology being a man’s world and inspire other women to do the same. I love the active nature of my role; I can continuously learn and make a difference. Being able to provide the solution to problems and improve processes gives me a sense of accomplishment and drives my passion for technology.

To any woman thinking about a career in tech, I say go for it! The industry is packed with opportunities and is always changing so you never sit still for too long. Don’t hesitate to follow your passion and make your mark. Find supportive mentors and colleagues and remember that your unique perspective is incredibly valuable. Tech needs diverse voices - together we can help to shape tomorrow.
